they live a lot along here and they're 00:00:00

they live a lot along here and they're mostly they are not working-class people 00:00:02

they are people who dropped out of 00:00:08

college because they saw it was stupid 00:00:11

and they're that sort of people we would 00:00:13

call them perhaps beatniks but you see 00:00:18

the city doesn't like it because they 00:00:22

aren't owning the right sort of cars and 00:00:24

therefore the local car salesman isn't 00:00:26

doing business through them they don't 00:00:29

have lawns and so nobody can sell them 00:00:31

lawn mowers they hardly use dishwashers 00:00:37

appliances of that kind they don't need 00:00:39

them and also they wear blue jeans and 00:00:43

the things like that and so the local 00:00:46

dress shops feel a bit put out having 00:00:48

these people around and they are very 00:00:51

little bit very simply 00:00:53

well they you mustn't do that you've got 00:00:59

to live in a complicated way you gotta 00:01:02

have the kind of car you know that 00:01:04

identifies you as a person of substance 00:01:06

and status and all that so there's a 00:01:10

great problem here in our society now 00:01:12

why is that this problem there's always 00:01:15

a very inconsiderable minority of these 00:01:18

non joiners or people who check out of 00:01:21

the game but you will find that insecure 00:01:25

societies are the most intolerant of 00:01:28

those who are non joiners they are so 00:01:36

unsure of the validity of their game 00:01:41

rules that they say everyone must play 00:01:41

now that's a double bind you can't say to a person you must play because what 00:01:52

you're saying is you are required to do 00:01:58

something which will be acceptable only 00:02:00

if you do it voluntarily 00:02:00

you see so everyone must play is the rule in the United States and it's the 00:02:08

rule in almost all Republican 00:02:13

governments 00:02:13

I mean Republican in the sense of 00:02:17

democratic because they're very uneasy 00:02:23

because everybody is responsible 00:02:26

you mean you may try not to be and avoid 00:02:29

it and say oh let the senators take care 00:02:31

of it or the president but theoretically 00:02:33

everyone's responsible now that's 00:02:35

terrifying 00:02:36

it's all right when you know what's 00:02:38

right there is an aristocracy there is 00:02:41

the clergy and they know what should be 00:02:43

done and they are used to really see but 00:02:46

now you'd see it's in your hands you say 00:02:48

what would embody what are we going to 00:02:49

do well I think this way and you think 00:02:52

that way and he thinks the other way and 00:02:53

so we're all unsettled and therefore we 00:02:58

become more and more conformist 00:03:00

individualism rugged individualism 00:03:02

always leads to conformism because 00:03:05

people get scared and so they herd 00:03:07

together and it compounded with 00:03:09

industrial society mass production etc 00:03:12

they all wear the same clothes and 00:03:14

they're sensible clothes that don't show 00:03:17

the dirt too much and we get dollar and 00:03:21

drabber and with the exception of the 00:03:24

Californian Revolution so what the 00:03:35

reason for this is in a way that 00:03:38

democracy as we have tried it started 00:03:43

out on the wrong foot you see in the 00:03:49

scriptures or the Christian scriptures 00:03:50

it says everybody is equal in the sight 00:03:52

of God now that's a mystical utterance 00:03:58

that means that from the standpoint of 00:04:02

God all people are divine and are 00:04:08

playing their true function 00:04:08

and that is something that is true on a certain plane of consciousness but come 00:04:16

down a step and try to apply the 00:04:23

mystical insight in the practical 00:04:25

affairs of everyday life and what you 00:04:27

get you get a parody of mysticism you 00:04:30

get the idea not that everybody is equal 00:04:32

in the sight of God but that all people 00:04:34

are equally inferior and that's why all 00:04:40

bureaucracies are ruled why the police 00:04:42

are rude and why you are made to wait in 00:04:45

lines and our obstreperous income tax 00:04:49

individuals and all that sort of person 00:04:51

because everybody's a crook everybody's 00:04:54

equally inferior see that becomes the 00:04:56

parody of democracy and that kind of 00:04:59

society watch out for it it turns in a 00:05:02

quick click into fascism because of its 00:05:06

terror of the outsider now a free and 00:05:10

easy society loves Outsiders in fact 00:05:15

it's a little bad for the outsiders 00:05:16

integrity because he becomes holy man 00:05:20

see and people make salams and give him 00:05:26

food and all that they really take care 00:05:29

of the outsider because they know that 00:05:31

man is doing for us what we haven't got 00:05:34

the guts to do that outsider who lives 00:05:37

up there in the mountain is that the 00:05:39

highest peak of human evolution his 00:05:41

consciousness is one with the divine and 00:05:43

great just there is someone like that 00:05:46

around it makes you feel a little better 00:05:48

he is realized he knows what it's all 00:05:50

about and so we need a number of those 00:05:52

people even though they don't join our 00:05:55

game they tell us you see what you're 00:05:58

doing is only a game it's ok I'm not 00:06:00

going to condemn you but it is only a 00:06:02

game and we up on that mountaintop are 00:06:05

watching you we love you we have 00:06:07

compassion for you and but the excuse 00:06:10

please we are going to join so that 00:06:15

gives a community great strength because 00:06:18

it tells the government in no uncertain 00:06:20

terms that there is something more than 00:06:23

government 00:06:23
