so then in the metaphysical sphere the mystic is the one who feels that 00:00:23
everything that happens is in some way 00:00:31
harmonious is in some way right is in 00:00:34
some way an integral part of the 00:00:40
universe now when we transplant or 00:00:46
translate that into the moral sphere the 00:00:50
sphere of human conduct the equivalent 00:00:53
is this there are no wrong feelings 00:00:53
there may be wrong actions in the sense of actions contrary to the rules of 00:01:07
human communication but the way you feel 00:01:17
towards other people loving hating etc 00:01:23
etc there aren't any wrong feelings and 00:01:27
so to try and force one's feelings to be 00:01:31
other than what they are is absurd and 00:01:34
furthermore dishonest but you see the 00:01:42
idea that there are no wrong feelings is 00:01:45
an immensely threatening idea to people 00:01:49
who are afraid to feel in any case 00:01:49
and this is one of the peculiar problems of our culture that we are terrified of 00:02:00
our feelings because they they take off 00:02:11
on their own and we think that if we 00:02:17
give them any scope and if we don't 00:02:20
immediately beat them down they will 00:02:23
lead us into all kinds of chaotic and 00:02:26
destructive action it's so funny that we 00:02:31
in our Western culture today say that 00:02:34
kind of thing 00:02:35
we who do more chaotic and reckless kind 00:02:38
of action than anybody ever did but if 00:02:47
for a change we would allow our feelings 00:02:52
and look upon their comings and goings 00:02:55
as something as beautiful and as natural 00:02:59
and necessary as changes in the weather 00:03:01
the going of night and day and of the 00:03:06
four seasons we would be at peace with 00:03:09
ourselves because what is problematic 00:03:14
for Western man is not so much his 00:03:18
struggles with other people and their 00:03:22
needs and their problems as his struggle 00:03:25
with his own feelings with what he will 00:03:28
allow himself to feel and what he won't 00:03:31
allow himself to feel he's ashamed to 00:03:36
feel really profoundly sad so much so 00:03:41
that he could cry it is not manly to cry 00:03:41
he is ashamed to loathe somebody because you are not supposed to hate people 00:03:51
he's ashamed to be so overcome with the beauty of something whether it be a 00:04:00
natural landscape or a member of the 00:04:05
opposite sex that he goes out of his 00:04:08
mind with this beauty because all that 00:04:12
kind of thing is not being in control oh 00:04:15
boy not kind of having your hand on the 00:04:17
wheel but it is because you see we don't 00:04:28
go with that that we are not in control 00:04:28
that we try to pretend that our inner life is different so I think this is the 00:04:39
most releasing thing that anybody can 00:04:49
possibly understand that your inner 00:04:53
feeling is never wrong that's to say 00:04:58
what you feel it's never wrong that you 00:05:03
feel that way 00:05:04
it may not be a right guide to what you 00:05:08
should do in other words if you feel 00:05:14
that you hate someone intensely 00:05:16
it isn't necessarily the right way of 00:05:19
dealing with that feeling to go out and 00:05:20
cut his throat but it is right that you 00:05:26
should have the feeling of Haiti or our 00:05:31
being sad or of what frightened 00:05:33
terrified whatever it is for you see 00:05:39
when a person comes to himself he comes 00:05:42
to be one with his own feeling and that 00:05:47
is the only way of being in a position 00:05:49
to control it it is in exactly this way 00:05:55
that the Sailor always keeps the wind in 00:06:00
his sails whether he wants to sail with 00:06:03
the wind or whether he wants to sail 00:06:04
against the wind he always uses the way 00:06:08
he never denies the wind well in it's 00:06:11
exactly that same sense that a person 00:06:14
has to keep going with his own feeling 00:06:17
whether he wants to act as the feeling 00:06:20
obviously suggests or act in a different 00:06:23
way he has to keep the feeling with him 00:06:26
because that's his own essential self 00:06:26
but when he attempts simply to sail against the wind 00:06:36
he's lost himself he's become just a kind of empty mask which hasn't got any 00:06:45
real life behind it on all its 00:06:53
protestations of love and goodwill are 00:06:55
Hollow so you see it is in the most 00:07:01
basic simple situation a mother has a 00:07:04
child she got it by accident you know 00:07:08
and she thinks oh heavens now I'm all 00:07:12
tied up full of responsibility and so on 00:07:15
I can't stand it so I really didn't want 00:07:18
to have it and I know I mustn't think 00:07:22
that thought 00:07:23
oh good mothers naturally love their 00:07:27
babies and so when she gets the baby she 00:07:31
says darling I love you 00:07:33
but her milk is sour and the baby gets 00:07:38
the other message and the baby is mixed 00:07:44
so to summer what the mystic primarily feels is the divinity the glory of 00:07:57
whatever is and when we apply that to 00:08:08
the moral sphere what is is what one 00:08:15
feels genuinely and this must always be 00:08:21
admitted always allowed it doesn't mean 00:08:28
to say let me emphasize this it doesn't 00:08:30
mean that we always are therefore 00:08:33
compelled to act upon the basis of what 00:08:36
we feel that is to say that to kill the 00:08:40
person we hate 00:08:42
hatred does not necessarily lead to 00:08:45
violence 00:08:46
it is unacknowledged hatred that leads 00:08:49
to violence honest hatred can be 00:08:56
expressed in much simpler ways but the 00:09:02
expression the recognition the 00:09:05
acceptance of what is honestly felt is 00:09:09
the moral equivalent of the vision that 00:09:13
whatever exists is a manifestation of 00:09:17
the divine 00:09:17
